Are you fighting an addiction or is someone you love fighting one? I hope that you can find some comfort in the fact that you are not alone. Over 20 million people in the United States alone have this same issue. Even so, we know that addictions, whether substance use, sex or even shopping, can cause significant damage to someone’s life and seeking help sooner rather than later is one of the best predictors for better outcomes.
Sometimes we may think to ourselves. “Yes, I may sometimes overdo it but is it really a problem?” Here is a list of questions to ask yourself. Do you or a loved one experience:
- Missing work/school
- Work/school problems
- Missing important engagements
- Isolating/secretive about activities
- Disrupted sleep patterns
- Legal problems
- Relationship/marital problems
- Financial problems (e.g. always needing money)
- Conversations dominated by using or drug/alcohol related topics
- Seeing concerning physical symptoms (not caused by any other medical conditions)
- Lacking awareness about one’s behavior
- Irritability
- Sudden loss of relationships that were once important
If these statements resonate with you, then taking a closer look could be the very thing that you need. I understand that seeking treatment can be anxiety-inducing but my approach is not to shame and blame you. I don’t believe that the person struggling with addiction is a weak willed person. If it were all about willpower I don’t think you’d be on this page right now! I instead focus on helping you to re-establish healthy habits and routines as well as restore your identity and purpose that have been lost in the jungle of addiction.
